Baby Boomer Celebrity: What Happened to Wonder Woman?

Posted on January 5th, 2012 in 1960s, 1970s, Celebrities, Movies, Pop Culture, Women's Liberation by Terry Hamburg

Some people call me a one role baby boomer wonder, but I’ll take it. It’s not like I didn’t have any career after Wonder Woman, but that’s a tough act to follow.

I always had the looks. I was Miss World USA in 1972. Sure, I’m not Helen Hayes but I was good enough to be in a couple of pop culture B-movies and land bit roles on television. I almost gave it up and went back to Arizona before my Big Break.

I’d like to think that Lynda Carter, as part of the baby boomer generation, was a force in women’s liberation. After all, I did portray Wonder Woman!

But some people never get it. I had quite a figure—almost 5′ 10″ and 38-36-38. Wonder Woman showed it off. So did Superman. But I hated guys looking at me only like a sex object. How do I know they did? Because they wrote and told me in explicit detail! I got more letters from panting voyeurs than inspired young ladies.

My acting resume has been spotty since WW. My real talent is singing. Before Hollywood, I had my own bands. After Wonder Woman ended in 1979, I recorded an album, including some songs I co-wrote, and performed regularly in Las Vegas for years.

You’ve probably seen me as a model for Maybelline cosmetics. I was also spokesperson for Lens Express.

I’ve been married to the same wonderful man since 1984. Only my second. Not bad by Hollywood standards. He was accused of banking and security fraud in 1992. There was tons of bad publicity, mainly because he was Wonder Woman’s husband. You might remember the day he was acquitted. In front of television reporters I gave him a big hug and kept shouting: “Not guilty!”

Currently, I’m concentrating on my music career. I do a one woman cabaret show. A couple of years ago, my second album was released and soared to #6 on Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart. Don’t be shocked. Wonder Women has many talents.

Trivia Factoids

Lynda Carter auditioned for the role of Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager.

While filming Battle of the Network Stars in 1976, she poured champagne over the head of host Howard Cosell. His hairpiece almost came undone. Later, whenever she saw him at a restaurant in New York, she would send over a bottle of champagne.

Lynda acted in the movie Apocalypse Now but ended up on the cutting room floor.

Bert was the first to be a nude centerfold, but he appeared in Cosmo in 1972. The first official volume of Playgirl came out the next year with Lyle.
